The Wind Her Only Guide
The Wind Her Only Guide For Youth Was In The Saddle There With Half A World To Ride

This bronze depicts a capable young woman on horseback, reining her horse to a halt as she briefly looks back at the ground she has covered. Her gesture implies resolve and determination. The design of horse and rider in the wind suggests a free spirit; the spirit of wonder and endless possibilities that typifies youth. The Badger Clark poem I’ve used for the title of this bronze expresses in words what I envisioned in my sculpture.

In Sight of the Ranch House

In Sight of the Ranch HouseIn the early days of ranching, the ranch house was typically many miles from the store or trading post.  Supplies were carried by packhorse or buckboard.  It was a time when simple things were important.  The winter brought traditions and giving lent magic to the season.  The rancher is returning home with gifts for his family topped off with a freshly cut Christmas tree.  With the ranch house in sight, he looks forward to the excitement of his waiting family and the warmth of home on Christmas Eve.

Buffalo Horse
Prairie Winds

The necessities of life on the prairie required daily labor.  On wash day, prairie winds fashioned graceful contours on fresh, crisp sheets.  The esthetics of life were often found in the splendor of these most ordinary tasks.  Work made love visible.

As a little girl, one of my first memories was helping my grandmother remove the freshly dried sheets from the clothes line.  Particularly, on windy days, the billowing of the sheets was magnificent in my child’s eye.

Closin Time
Closin' Time

It is as American a tradition as apple pie on the Fourth of July;

It’s closing time on a Friday night.

A good ol’ time at the local watering hole has been had by all.

This cowboy... a legend in his own mind... has his eye on the prize.

A sweet-talking swagger with a tickle behind the ear has her feeling like a million bucks.

At 10 she’s a two... at two she’s a 10!

The girls all get prettier at Closin’ Time.

The VikingThe Viking

From the 8th to the 11th century, bands of sea raiders plundered the entire known world.  These warriors were known as VIKINGS.

My sculpture depicts a classic Viking warrior, chosen for height, impressive strength, and prowess.  He wears woolen pants bound to his legs by thongs of leather for unrestricted movement in battle.  His shoes are of leather, tied at the ankles and pointed in the style of the period.  A tunic of intricate interlocking iron rings called” byrnie” or chain mail protects his torso in combat.  He wears a conical helmet with nose guard of forged iron over a padded leather cap.  In order not to obscure his vision, his hair is braided at each temple.  A cloak of heavy wool blows in the wind while pinned at the shoulder with an elaborate broach leaving his sword arm free.

My warrior, hold the famous Viking sword.  It has heavy, decorated pommel with a three foot Damascus double edged blade with full length fuller.  From his belt hangs his fighting dagger and famous fighting ax.  In his left hand he holds his battle shield of iron reinforced linden wood which is three feet in diameter and protects him from chin to knee.  An iron boss protects his hand at the handle.

I’ve placed the Viking on a pebble beach looking across the surf out to the sea, symbolic of his passion for voyaging abroad.   All dimensions and shapes of the helmet, dagger, sword, shield, chain mail, and broach were taken from actual artifacts from burial sites.

Buffalo Horse
Buffalo Horse

The Plains Indian culture revolved around the buffalo, and the horse added a new, exciting and productive way to hunt. Not only did the horse change their way to hunt, but it also allowed the tribes to cover greater distances in moving. The prized “Buffalo Horse” sculpture depicts a Sioux warrior leading the buffalo horse to the hunt. All tribes had strict rules followed by everyone involved in the hunt. The very special buffalo horse was seldom ridden the sometimes great distance to where the hunt began. The saddle on the pony horse is the prairie chicken snare saddle that served also as a pack saddle. The saddle on the buffalo horse is the ultra light pad saddle. The warrior carries the short heavy hunting bow and a quiver full of arrows.

The bow and arrow continued to be used long after the acquisition of firearms for their ease of use on horseback at a full run.The buffalo horse was often used in war and was the most valued of all the Plains Indian possessions.
